2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Release Date

Mazda engineers fix the weakness of the CX-5 without affecting its strong point.

Mazda has a very strict agenda for redesigning the CX-5, a crossover that now accounts for a quarter of all company sales.
“We want to primarily not disrupt the wheel and its handling, we want to dramatically improve the NVH [noise, vibration and violence], and improve the ride a bit,” said Dave Coleman, engineering manager of Mazda vehicle dynamics.

That’s because even though the CX-5 is praised for its driving dynamics and incredible driving power, it’s loud in the cabin and stiff on top of the impact. Anytime I recommend the CX-5 to the crossover shopper, it comes with warnings about driving quality and lack of noise isolation. Now, however, the 2017 model addresses these issues, while also building more style and design. The new CX-5 is finally a crossover that you can recommend without any refutation.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Design

It starts with a new design, which tightens the CX-5 line and builds a stylish look. One of the most notable changes is that the bonnet now stays farther above the headlamps, echoing the long three-line CX-9’s nose look. The smaller headlamps are now the home of LED illumination, and the optional LED back lights are behind. The CX-5 undoubtedly looks most conspicuous in the Soul Red Crystal launcher color (option $ 595), but with any color, this is a very interesting entry in its class.

What you can not see from the outside is how much effort is being pursued by Mazda. To meet Coleman’s goal in dealing with NVH, the new CX-5 complements the extra sound barrier material everywhere. In the cargo area, for example, the open piece of plastic is now coated with felt or carpet, the windows are double in size, and there is a thick seal around them. The door now has a third rubber seal (as in the CX-9), windshield wipers sitting underneath so that it does not generate much wind noise, there is a closer gap between the bottom edge and the body, there is a new impression-lined the lower body crib of a better car muffle sound, extra insulating material on C and D pillars, and even new damper weight on the front struts to extinguish the road noise.

It worked. On the road surface, the constant hum and buzz that filled the last CX-5 cabin was lost. The conversation is easy, and you no longer have to play the radio to actually hear it from the sounds of the road and the wind. Without any objective action to support it, I would give the impression that Mazda is now basically subject to other things in this segment, including the excellent Honda CR-V. The downside of all this extra sound isolation is that the CX-5 becomes a bit heavier. The rear-wheel drive model produces 94 kilograms while the AWD variant adds 66 pounds.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Powertrain

The only engine option, 2.5 liter inline-four, carries almost nothing unchanged. Torque remains 185 pound-feet, while power goes up from 184 to 187 horsepower. The changes amount to new machine control software, new asymmetrical oil control ring, and newly re-formed pistons to eliminate hotspots that tend to be tapped, which can cause the machine’s computer to reduce power. The piston change is an important upgrade for the responsive engine with a 13: 1 compression ratio set to run on a regular 87-octane gas.

The 2.0-liter CX-5 Sport 155-hp engine and six-speed manual transmission, however, have gone for 2017.

As before, there is a feeling that the 2.5-liter engine is “enough” power for the CX-5 when you accelerate fast. It was never lonely, nor the acceleration of the explosion. The very linear linear throttle tip makes the car easy to move smoothly in the city, and the deliberate engine power curve produces peak torque of 3,250 rpm in front-drive cars and 4,000 rpm on the AWD model. Automatic six-speed downshift shift – this is reprogrammed specifically this year for a more responsive kickdown – and holds on to low gears in turn, all the better to keep the powertrain primed because it sprints to the highway after an inter-branch exchange. The attempt to turn off such a sound tamed the machine’s impacts prominently, though still rough as the car drove.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Fuel Economy

Fuel economy rating falls on paper for front-and all-wheel drive models. The first now returns 24 miles per gallon of the city and 31 highways, versus the 26/33 rankings last year; for the CX-5 AWD, the EPA number fell less drastically, from 24/29 to 23/29 mpg. But it should be noted that the EPA is beginning to use more stringent efficiency tests for the 2017 model year, which drags the numbers. In the real world, the new CX-5 is likely to be as efficient or even slightly lower than before.

Mazda promised to launch a more efficient turbodiesel engine for the CX-5 later this year, although some officials still have little details to share so far.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Comfort

Rider changes and handling are directed primarily at increased comfort, although Coleman says only that the suspension “softens.” For Mazda, the fun-to-drive character is a unique selling point, so the engineers seem to have fought back and forth. between comfort and responsiveness. The steering rack now goes straight to the front subframe for example, releasing three rubber mounts and thus some obscurity. But it will introduce unwanted hardness, so Mazda replaces the front arm bush with a fluid-filled unit to deal with unpleasant feedback. The redesigned front suspension tengger also, which requires an asymmetric spring that Mazda claims reduces friction.

The most prominent in riding the CX-5 is a lump that is now absorbed by the suspension and not your butt. It’s comfortable, though perhaps not luxurious, above all street surfaces. No more impact on the expansion joint or manhole cover. Instead, Mazda feels like flattening the surface of the road below you, easily absorbing the most unpleasant input.

After all, the crossover has not lost an interesting driving attitude I’ve ever loved before. There may be a bit of roll and pitch again, but for the most part the CX-5 sharply changes, settles quickly through the bend, and is not distracted by the bump in the middle. The steering is heavier than the others in the classroom, with the weights being gradually formed as you rotate more speed and angle. Although not very talkative, there is at least some feedback through the wheel, unlike most other small CUVs. Press the Sport button for transmission, find some winding roads, and you’ll have fun very well considering it’s a 187-hp crossover.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Interior

Whether you are driving or just for a trip, you will notice that Mazda has also changed the entire interior of the CX-5. Now looks very much like the CX-9, with new polygonal air vents, smarter climate control switchgear, front door rearranges that are now flattened rather than riding in front of doors, and new gauges with 4.7-inch color travel. computer. Shifter is repositioned forward with miniscule amount so it is easy to reach. The optional head-up display is now full of color and is projected onto the windshield, not on a small piece of plastic above the dash, so it takes a little time to refocus your view on it. And the Mazda Connect infotainment system moves to a tablet-like place at the top of the dash.

There are also changes you will not realize, but you will appreciate. The new side-to-side mirrors and panels of the panels’ panel panels provide slightly more visibility, useful for driving in the city. The door handle is now closer to the driver and passenger, making it easier to open the door, Mazda claims. The exterior door handle has been redesigned for easy gripping, and the steering wheel is specially reshaped to enhance long-term comfort as you wrap your fingers around the rim. Windshield wipers are available with electric heating elements for cold morning. And the new sound system design allows smaller door speakers, thereby increasing the door pocket space. The sunroof is even larger, responding directly to buyer feedback.

The cargo space at the rear actually fell slightly on paper, from 34.1 to 30.9 cubic feet with the rear seat up and 65.4 to 59.6 with them lowered. That puts the new CX-5 at the lower end of the class in terms of cargo space, well behind Honda CR-V (39.2 / 75.8) and Toyota RAV4 (38.4 / 73.4). Mazda calculates that the main measurement differences are caused by the new lower model roofline, which cuts from floor to ceiling by 2.1 inches, and real-world storage space is almost the same as before for most owners. But this important consideration of cargo space is the main buy attention.

In terms of equipment, the optional adaptive cruise control now works up to 0 miles per hour, compared to the previous 18 mph; heated rear seats and new rear USB ports available; the camera module mounted on the windshield is now smaller and can read traffic signs; now there is a hot steering wheel; back seat reclining; and there is a power liftgate available for the first time. Mazda said buyers specifically requested power liftgate, which is available on almost all CX-5 rivals. There are still some options available on rival crossovers that you can not find here, such as refrigerated seats, 360-degree cameras, kick-to-open liftgate, and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (although Mazda engineers say they do it and ultimately will offer it as a software update).

2017 Mazda CX-5 Release Date

Mazda said that 48 percent of CX-5 buyers last year chose a Grand Touring trim that was loaded, giving an average car deal price above $ 28,000. In other words, CX-5 buyers tend to like a very complete model. The starting price, only $ 24,985 for the front-wheel sports model, rose to $ 26,855 for a fairly complete tour, and reached $ 31,655 for the previous Grand Touring all-wheel-drive option. On any model, the cost of adding AWD and not front-wheel drive is $ 1,300.

The value of a good value sweet spot in this range is probably CX-5 Touring. Compared to Sport, it adds a rear-colored glass, leather upholstery, warm front seat, automatic climate control, thrust start, rear USB port, blind spot monitoring, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Grand Touring adds 19-inch alloy wheels instead of 17s, leather seats, rear lights and LED taillights, power liftgate, power sunroof, navigation, Bose sound systems, adaptive cruise control, and pre-collision braking.

Mazda devotes a lot of engineering resources to make sure its cars are more fun to drive than their competitors, and that’s sure to work. But the strategy does not resonate with buyers, as evidenced in showrooms: from 3 to CX-5, Mazda entries tend to be quite far from the sales rankings in their segment. Companies seem to get the message, focusing on handling customer complaints, such as excess NVH and lack of certain features, with the new CX-5. Still running well, but now also riding well, has a lot of equipment, and allows residents to communicate without shouting.

Combine that with a double-take exterior styling and plusher interior, and there’s no question to me that the CX7-201 is a compact crossover you want. Not the most widespread, not fuel-efficient, not the most affordable – but definitely the most sought after.
