The ongoing technology and infotainment quibbles continue to disappoint the promising sports sedan.

2018 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 tries hard to lure fans of cars. There are basic red and black color schemes, attractive biturbo V6, carbon fiber accents, sport-tuned suspension, and rear-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. What might be wrong? Well, as promising as it sounds, the Red Sport Q50 is plagued by steering-by-wire technology that prevents it from feeling like a true car enthusiast. There is a very promising piece for the Q50 Red Sport, but some important things hold it from being a competitive sports sedan.

Pros

2018 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport Styling

Q50 Red Sport looks straight-up menacing. Angry LED eyebrows on the headlights gave Q50 a demon look. It is curved and curved in all the right places. At the rear, there is a sporty rear diffuser that is sporty in between two Sport Sport exhaust tip. The unique 19-inch wheels with red brake calipers hiding behind them further differentiate Red Sport from other Q50s. Optional carbon fiber bits on the mirror and the declid spoiler are just the icing on the cake. Pony goes up $ 400 and Infiniti’s front emblem even shines at night – a bit of an exaggeration for some people, but something I love.

Choose a Proactive Package ($ 2,700) and you’ll get a whole set of safety and comfort technologies. These include notable features such as blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, but with a twist. Ignore visual and audible warnings that someone is driving your blind spot, start changing paths, and Blind Spot Intervention will point you back on your path to prevent you from hitting the vehicle. Distance Control Assist lets you drive with just a gas pedal and will brake automatically in heavy traffic. If your vehicle’s senses include too much throttle input for traffic conditions, the accelerator will push back to your feet. At first it was a bit scary, but something I appreciated on my morning journey. Do not want this security system on? Turn them off by pressing a button on the steering wheel.

Disconnected wheel (literally)

There’s no mechanical connection to the rack, and, well, you can tell. With the code name Direct Adaptive Steering (DAS), this drive-by-wire system is digitally respond to steering input. At low speed it feels very strange without the true on-center sensation. Gain speed and system increases in effort, but still feel blurry when pushed in the corner. Unlike hydraulic or electric shelves, the watershed transmits almost zero feedback from the road surface. Sport and Sport + mode accelerates the steering response, but makes a very heavy effort in the process. Infiniti has done some updates on its watershed system, but still can not do it right. No self-confidence inspires and goes against the will of powertrain.

Rough ride

Where you feel the feedback from the road is through your spine. Q50 Red Sport has a well-controlled body movement, but at the expense of passenger comfort. Even in Standard travel mode it feels stiff and worsens in various sports modes. Of course this is a “sports sedan”, but rivals Q50 Europe better sort the suspension; both BMW 3 Series and Audi S4 feel stiff popping

Noisy in the wrong area

From the 40 miles per hour above, there was so much wind noise that I kept checking if there was a window open. On the highway, there are more roads and wind rackets. Considering this is a vehicle worth $ 61,710, I would have predicted Q50 to isolate the cabin from an unwanted noise such as the BMW 340i or the Lexus IS 350 F-Sport. However there is a little audible drama of the V6 400 hp – if there is a noise, I would rather be a good type.

Double problem

Infiniti does not give you one, but two touch screens to play well – too bad does not work well. Theoretically, it sounds good to have a navigation map displayed on the top screen and radio controls at the bottom, but a lot of information to watch out for at once. While the higher nav screen looks like the older Nissan infotainment system, the bottom view looks like it was designed by a completely different team. The lower screen is further away from the driver’s sight line and has a slow response time, making it difficult to glance at and change radio stations, for example.
