The Highlander seats up to eight, offering an economy class fuel-class hybrid model, and comes standard with driver aids – including autonomous emergency braking – that get the best safety ratings. This does not change for the year ’18 model; There is not even a choice of new colors. Instead, the Highlander boots on the 2017 spruce-up model that helped spark a 23 percent sales spurt.
Updates include sharper front and rear styling and more standard safety features. The advanced V-6 and new transmissions are equipped with added power and better fuel economy. Toyota added a sporty SE model that introduced a slightly sharper handling. And Highlander Hybrid becomes more affordable thanks to the addition of LE and XLE trim at a lower price. This is the most extensive change in this popular mid-range crossover since the 2014-year model, when it was last completely redesigned.
Built with an integrated body construction and integrated frame that qualifies as a crossover, the Highlander is of greater use than the compact RAV4 Toyota crossover and the shorter legs are shorter and 1,500 pounds lighter than the full-size, separate-body and frame Sequoia. This includes a more accommodative mid-range crossover, even if the third row is not very friendly for an adult-sized body.

No changes. The 18’s brought a bigger grille and a richer rear wheel, which was part of a refreshing 17-year model that effectively muscled-up the Highlander view. The seats of eight passengers through the bench three seats and the standard three-seat bench are standard on LE and LE Plus models and cost-free options on XLE, Limited, and Platinum. Model SE, XLE, Limited, and Platinum come with a second row captain seat for a seat of seven passengers. Between the second row bucket, Toyota provides a practical folding center shelf with cupholders. Upholstery from Base and LE fabric, to SofTex combination fabric and Sofyan design at LE Plus, to standard skins on other models. Starting with LE Plus, all trim levels have an 8 inch touchscreen dashboard in place of a 6.1-inch screen. Like climate controls – featuring individual temperature settings for all three lines – the touch screen is centered on the dashboard, making it easy to reach the front passenger but slightly stretched for the driver.
It’s about the only ergonomic compromise in the cabin that, even at the LE level, provides eight cupholders, four bottles, and five USB ports. Indoor storage space is the main highlight, with special attention due to the highly practical shelf that extends along the right two thirds of the lower instrument panel. The volume of cargo is in the upper range of the class. There are 13.8 cubic feet behind the third row, 42 behind the second row, and 83 with both rows folded. A standard power liftgate starts with LE Plus, although no models are available with the convenience of a hands-free liftgate operation.

Most Highlander buyers opt for the non-hybrid V-6 model. Like its predecessor, the latest six are 3.5 liters, but have direct fuel injection and other advancements to increase horsepower to 295, increase by 25, and 263 pound-feet of torque, increase by 15 on LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited and Platinum models , the V-6 benefits of a fuel-efficient stop-start. It automatically turns off when the Highlander does not move, then restarts when the driver releases the brake pedal; Accessories like air conditioning, keep going. The special fleet base model continues with a 2.7 liter four cylinder cylinder consisting of 185 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque and withstand six-speed automatic transmission.
Hybrid re-combine the latest V-6 with battery-electric power. This is not a plug-in. It recharges by recovering lost energy during braking and sliding. It also gets a strong boost for 2017, rising to 306 net horsepower, from 280 (Toyota does not cite net torque for Hybrid). Here, continuously variable automatic transmission is used to replace automatic automatic with stepped gear changes. In all Highlanders, the AWD system is not designed for serious off-roading but is intended as traction on snowy sidewalks or gravel surfaces.
Even if you can find it in retail inventory, do not buy an inefficient four-cylinder Base model and do not save fuel. The only V-6 gas version provides more than enough performance, though the eight-speed auto can be slow for downshift when you need more power at midrange speeds. It was a tradeoff for its gas mileage advantage over a six-speed long. The hybrid complements a surprising acceleration and incredible mileage. AWD is standard on Hybrid and we highly recommend it on V-6 gas unless you live in a place that is not snowy.
Highlander emphasizes ride comfort over sporty handling. Most competitors, in fact, have a sharper road manners and a sharper steering wheel. The Tauter SE suspension improves handling a bit, but most buyers will probably choose it for unique styling details.

The ’18 Highlander continues to be a model of various standard and optional features.
